the singing Hoosiers this past semester as Dr. Chris Albanese has been on parental leave. We're looking forward to a great show today and spending time together on a cold day in Bloomington. Our first set features music from around the world. Cala del Dia was written by Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino and features my friend and colleague Ryan Block on the piano. The translation is this, I love the light of dawn because it kisses you. and makes you alive, alive and fanciful. Straight tassel to the wind of noon, I love the sun that gilds you, ripe and mine. Alas, heart of the night, finery of the day, my life, I am longing for your happiness. When the afternoon cries for its lost light, I love the song you put in my life. I love so much the night that is infinite. as your sweet hour dark and warm. Alas, heart of the night, finery of the day. My life, I am longing for your happiness." Following that, we'll sing Joseph Jennings' arrangement of the spiritual, Oh Jerusalem in the Morning, featuring Ren Stark. Once again, welcome to Holiday Chimes. Thank you and enjoy. Traviesa, viva y traviesa. El destinamento del medio día, del medio día. is infinite. What's the matter, oh, Jerusalem in the morning? I said, my poor Mary, what's the matter, oh, Jerusalem in the morning? Oh, Joseph, Joseph, what is the matter, oh, Jerusalem in the morning? Well, now, Joseph, Joseph, what's the matter, oh, Jerusalem in the morning? The night is chilling. What's the matter? Oh, Jerusalem in the morning. The night is chilling. What is the matter? Oh, Jerusalem in the morning. I hear the oxen bawling. I hear the lambs are squalling. Oh, Jerusalem in the morning. I hear the cattle lowing. I hear the rooster crowing. Oh Jerusalem in the morning. Mary, Mary, what's the matter? Oh Jerusalem in the morning. I'm singing. Oh Jerusalem. Oh Jerusalem. Oh Jerusalem in the morning. Well now, little baby Jesus born in a stable. Oh Jerusalem in the morning. I'm singing. Oh Jerusalem. Jerusalem in the morning. Little baby Jesus lying in a manger, oh Jerusalem in the morning. in the morning. in the morning. See the stars are glowing, their lusts are showing. Oh, Jerusalem in the morning. I see the moon in crescent, phosphorescent. Oh, Jerusalem in the morning. O'er the land of the free Fulgerman, features a prayer of blessing over the Hanukkah candles. The translation is this, blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us kindle the Hanukkah light. Happy Hanukkah. Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days at this time. Everlasting Flame features harpist Greta Hodes. Thank you. She's really tall. Hello, my name is Lauren Zanti. I'm a junior choral music education major. And my name's Ethan Brown. I'm also a junior choral music education major. And we are the co-directors of Singing Hoosiers Acapella, which is the student-led acapella group in the Singing Hoosiers. Today we will be singing a piece called Snow Angel by Renee Rapp. Lauren will go a little bit into what it's about, but when I hear Snow Angel, I think of this story from my childhood. My grandfather, every time we would go out in the snow, he would say, watch out where the huskies go. Don't you eat that yellow snow. And I know it's catchy, right? And I haven't told Shaq this yet, so it's a surprise for them, too. But every time I see snow, I think about that now, and I have to be really careful, because you never know. You never know where the huskies went. And after that, This song is basically just about making it through the winter, no matter what's happening in your life. This song also features soloists Kate Doughty, Sydney Nip, and Alex Felicione. And we are very, very excited to present this for you. Snow angel. eyes closed. Jolly old Saint Nicholas, lean your ear this way. Don't you tell a single soul what I'm gonna say. Christmas Eve is coming soon now, my dear old man. What you'll bring to me Tell me if you can When the clock is striking twelve When I'm fast asleep Down the chimney dark and damp With your pack you'll creep All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row Susie wants a sled. Nellie wants a picture book, yellow, blue, and red. Now I think I'll leave to you what to give the rest. Choose for me, dear Santa Claus, you decide what's best. Do, do, da, do, do, ba, do, ba, do, ba, do, ba, do. Do, da, do, do, ba, do, ba, do, ba, do. so much for spending a part of your holiday season with us. My name is Emma Hall, and I'm a senior fourth year member of the Singing Hoosiers. This time of year always makes me think back on my favorite holiday traditions. The holiday season was always one of my favorite times as a kid. From baking cookies, to decorating the tree, to sledding down the big hill at the local park with my family and almost getting stuck in the woods, Christmas has always brought me so much love and laughter. Music has always been a connection to the holidays as well. For the past few years, performing with the Singing Hoosiers at this show has become my favorite tradition. Now December is synonymous with singing and dancing on stage and sparkly red sequins with people I love. While I'm sad knowing this is my final time performing this show with this group, the magic of Singing Hoosiers will continue to be a part of my holidays for years to come. I know in the future my new tradition will be listening to songs we perform together, immediately being transported back to times like these. For the rest of my life, I will be able to remember all of the beautiful memories we made on stage. and we can't wait to share even more magical moments with all of you right now. So without further ado, sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of Holiday Chives. And heaven, and heaven, and nature sings. Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Let nothing you dismay. Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas day. open space. in great fear. Prepare and go, the angels said, to Bethlehem, be not afraid, for there you'll find this happy morn of priestly Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle bells jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride a one horse. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride a one horse. Oh, what fun it is to ride and sing this song tonight. Good afternoon, everyone. I am Lyda Borhill, a master's student and the assistant conductor for the Singing Hoosiers. You just heard Resolution, the vocal jazz group of the Singing Hoosiers, which includes Kyla Sherry, Emma Hornbecker, Gabby Van Hoosier, yes, that's really her last name, Gracie Kitchell, Mary Timmer, Emma Grimm, Aiden Courtney, Christian Paz Aguilar, Sam Foltz, Katherine Brown, Ethan Brown, Lane Harden, and Joey Schmidt. Please give them another round of applause. We all enjoy holiday traditions and time with loved ones, and I think many of us hope specifically for the magic of a white Christmas. In Virginia, where I grew up, it's a rare occasion, but every once in a while, it snows on Christmas. Well, one Christmas, we got a big snow, and my siblings and I went outside to go sledding. I think I was probably about 10 years old. My older brother says, we should build a jump. And my sister and I were too young to know any better. So we were like, yay, a jump. And we all got to work. All the parents know where this is going, I think. With the jump built, it came time to test it out. And y'all know, it wasn't the big brother who did the test run. Oh, no. It was the little sister. And that was me. Again, too young to know any better, down I went. And I hit the jump and launched what felt like a million feet in the air. And somehow I ended up completely horizontal like Superman, and I landed as if I had meant to do a belly flop. The good news is there's no danger of hitting the trees at the bottom of the hill because that kind of landing pretty much stops your momentum completely. And that was the first time I'd ever had the wind knocked out of me, but it was not the first time or the last that my older brother's antics ended with me getting injured and him doubled over laughing about it. I did wise up, though, and I'm proud to say I fall for fewer and fewer older brother tricks every year. We'll kick off our next set with a medley of songs from a beloved holiday movie, The Polar Express. After that, you'll hear fun, upbeat tunes titled There Is a Santa Clause and Christmas Dance. The second act is accompanied by IU's illustrious wind ensemble led by Dean Ryan Kelly. This concert simply would not have the same holiday spirit without them. Please help me welcome the IU Wind Ensemble. All right, everyone, it's time to board the Polar Express. Get in the spirit of the season, grab your hot chocolate, and remember, you have everything you need if you just believe. The magic carpet on a rail never takes a rest. Flying through the mountains and the snow. You can ride for free and join the fun if you just say yes. Because that's the way things happen on the Polar Express. Ooh, the whistle blows. That's the sound of her singing. Ding, ding, ding, ding. Golly, look at her go. Wonder if they'll get there soon. anybody's guess, because that's the way things happen on the Polar Express. When we get there, we'll scream, yeah! We'll arrive with the wave we make, laughing away. If you want to join us, come along. You can be our guest, because that's the way things happen on the Polar Coaster. Hot chocolate, here we only got one rule. Never, ever let it cool. Keep it cooking in a pot. Soon you got hot chocolate. Hot, hot, oh, we got it. Hot, hot, hey, we got it. Hot, hot, oh, we got it. Hot chocolate, here we only got one rule. You need to share it with the spirit of the season. And feel it in the air. People smile as it passes you by. The day will be here soon. Dreams are dancing in the children's eyes. Hearts are singing, bells are ringing too. to think there wasn't time to blink before it zoomed right by. And everything I knew, I knew. And everything that you knew, too. Is absolutely now a true because. Without a doubt, there is a Santa Claus. Santa Claus. I just saw him too. I just saw him too. Yet my whole life. Yet my whole life. He seemed fake to me. What a fantasy, what a fantasy appears to be. Keep your head straight when fairy tales come true. Though I can't complain, because if I'm insane, that means you are too. So why don't we make a pact of solemn pledge to be exact that Santa's real? In fact, he always was. Oh, yes, yes, absolutely. Okay, so Susie originally wanted the blue bike, but now she wants the red one. But I think the elf can whip that up in no time. Oh, it just takes me back to those days when we were young. We'd go dance and get all cozy by the fire. Don't you remember? And then Comet broke his front leg, so now I'll have to hold tryouts. I think I have time on the 12th, but then there's still a few more stops to make. I need to schedule my dentist appointment. Hey, honey, the Grinch is thinking about stealing Christmas again. You cool with that? Of course, anything for you, honey. Wait, what? You're not listening. I mean, we finally get to do something together and you're too focused on Christmas Eve. Well, it's just a lot of kids are counting on me right now. I mean, don't you just love their faces when they wake up on Christmas morning? They run down the stairs and see their wildest dreams come true. I just want their Christmas to be perfect. But what about my Christmas? What's with the long face? It's just, it's been forever since we've actually spent time together. But we're together now! No, I mean actually together. Right now you're too focused on who's naughty and who's nice. I mean together like it used to be. I understand you're busy and people are counting on you, but sometimes it seems like Christmas is more important to you than me. That is simply not true! Okay, you're right. I guess I've just been spending so much time in the workshop and checking my lists twice, but that doesn't mean you aren't important to me. I mean, they don't call it the busiest time of year for nothing, there's still to fix some cookies to frost. And stockings to be hung on the chimney with care in hopes that Saint Nick will soon be there. Unfortunately, yes. It's what I have to do to give everyone the perfect Christmas. But Nick, that's just stuff. That's not what makes a perfect Christmas. Christmas is about kindness and spending time with the ones you love. Toys rust and cookies go stale. But the feelings you feel when you are with the ones you love, will those? Those last forever. You are absolutely right. I guess I've just been so occupied making everyone else's Christmas special that I forgot who makes my Christmas special. Do you remember what we first met? Yes, it was the winter solstice. And I saw you across the room and you were a vision in blue. You came up to me and you were a nervous wreck, stumbling over every word that came out of your mouth. But then you asked me to dance. And I knew you were the one I wanted to spend the rest of my Christmas as well. I felt the same way. I only wish we could have a night like that again. Well, I know it's not Christmas yet, but would you be opposed to an early Christmas gift? As long as it is not another fruitcake. I thought you liked my fruitcake! Honey, nobody likes fruitcake. Okay. Adding making gift receipts to my to-do list. Santa! But of course. Come along, darling. this afternoon at Holiday Chimes. My name is Ryan Kelly. I have the great honor of being one of the associate deans for the Jacobs School of Music, home to all these amazing musicians behind me, both in the pit, on the stage, and also the fantastic IU Trombone Choir under the direction of Dr. Brittany Lash that greeted you out in the lobby. This is the time of year where we have so much to celebrate. I mean, the first thing is the fact that it's the time of year, the most wonderful time of the year, time with family and friends, with great food, with great music. We all look forward to the holiday season, of course. The second thing is, and this one's for the students, it's almost the end of the semester. And we are very close to getting a nice bit, who am I kidding? This is faculty and staff too. We are all excited to reach the end of the semester and get a nice little break to rest and recharge before we dive into the new year. And of course, I already mentioned great music. We've got more great music than just what you're enjoying this afternoon. We've got the Nutcracker going up the street this weekend at the Musical Arts Center and also next weekend and lots of other wonderful performances at the Jacobs School this week, including a sing-along performance of Handel's Messiah on Tuesday evening. I hope you can join us. I hope we get to see you again in one of our audiences this week. There's so much great music happening as we all celebrate this wonderful time of year together. So again, thank you so much for being here this afternoon. And behalf of all of us at the Jacobs School, we wish you the very happiest of holidays and a spectacular new year. Thanks so much. listing things to celebrate. I'm sure there are some of you who thought I forgot about one big thing. Of course, I don't have to tell anybody in this room, it's been a pretty exciting fall semester here on the Bloomington campus. And that excitement is going to only grow tonight when for the first time since 1967, the Indiana Hoosiers beat the Ohio State Buckeyes to be crowned Big Ten champs. So, since we are here performing for you this afternoon, we're not going to be able to be at the game, but we wanted to bring a little bit of the game to us. So pardon me while I go off script and outside the program for just a moment to add one tune to this afternoon's concert. And I invite you to please clap and sing along if you know the words.
