is now in progress. My name is Leonard Beasley. As usual, right here on Second Street on College and Second Street in this mall in Bloomington, Indiana. So across the street from Wendy's Restaurant. So ladies and gentlemen, I am here right now. I would like to introduce my new guest on my show in this office as I would like to introduce an industrial design and Product development and the owner of this place phonocraft Manufacturing records and I like to introduce my new guest on my show. It's Mr. Jack Kilby. It's good to see you again. Good to see you Lana Thanks for having me on your show. Yes is we're finally get to have you be it on my show. Yeah Yes, indeed. Mr. Jack So I'm really excited so Yeah, I believe it's last five episodes or so if I'm right. So I'm absolutely delighted that I had your wife gonna be on my show. Oh yeah, she really enjoyed it. She likes to dance and show off for the camera. So she's been enjoying it. She looks forward to doing your next show. I guess you got another one coming up. Um, I believe we have one. So, so I believe have one anyway. So, so I really excited about it. So, um, before, uh, we're going to have this project, I'm glad I first met you right here. Is that right? That's right. Yeah. You came in, you, I guess you met my partner, Eric first. Yes. I met your partner, Eric. and you gave him, submitted some of your music, told us about your project, and then that's when we learned about you. Although I remember seeing you years ago play your drums on Public Access television. It was just you playing drums. I remember your face, and then you gave us those songs, and we figured out what was gonna be on what side, and we planned out the track list. Make sure we got it all just the way you want it and We're waiting on the blanks to come in for that to do your 12 inch But today I thought we would do a 7 inch just of one of your songs What song we have there? We're gonna play a song called Soak up the Sun summer nights from summer night summer night. Oh, yeah Yeah, so look up the Sun from summer nights. Yes. Yep we got that in the queue and we're going to show the people out there a little bit of the process how how we make records here one at a time where we don't press records here we cut records individually and this is sort of a one-stop shop for all your record needs we sell records that other people made and and we'll make a record for you we can do five inch seven inch ten inch and twelve inch records We can do picture disc records. Like CDs. Like CDs. What do you mean? Oh, CDs. Yeah, yeah. That's right. Here's an example. It's not a CD, but it's the size of a CD. The size of a CD. You can only put about a minute on there. You don't have any songs that are a minute. No, I don't. If you did, we could do one of these, which they're nice and cute. Right. But today we'll be doing a seven inch record, your standard seven inch record. Right. And we'll be showing people what a record lathe is and how we prepare the disc. Absolutely. And then we'll quality control it after we're done and listen to it and see how it sounds. And yeah, that's what we're going to do. So thanks for having me on. I appreciate it. Big fan. After we found out who you were, we researched and saw all of your shows. Not all of them, because you have so many of them. We watched a bunch, and then my wife thought, Angelia thought that she would like to dance on your show. Yes, and that was great, perfect timing, Jeff. She's a big fan of yours, too. And she is, and that's why she had been on my guest on my show our last five episodes. That's right, yeah, yeah. And actually, she's looking for more people to be on your show, more people that like to dance. Yes. So she's going to help you out there. So she'll probably get to help me out, too. And you know, Mr. Jack Kilby. So tell us about the more about record owner as an owner. Okay. So, um, well we started this, this business here in this location at two, two, two West second street last, it's been about a year. So, so at the beginning of, of December of last year, my partner, Eric Hunt and I combined all of our equipment together and um, Decided we want to offer high quality records to people we thought Bloomington would be a good city to be in Since there's a lot of creative people here And and also if you just want to buy a record we just have records for sale And we we work a lot with people in the hip-hop community and we work with people songwriters such as yourselves We work with DJs and and then and then we find artists that we like and we have our own record label where we put out some artists that we like and We're just vinyl enthusiasts. So we're just trying to keep records alive and People seem to enjoy them. So we want to make sure they can enjoy it to the fullest right? That's right So Mr. Jack Kilby, I really enjoy your business and your service here making records. You said December 2016 or 17? 17, yep. 2017, almost a year. Yep. Now before that, I've been cutting records since I got my first record cutter in 2000. That's the year 2000, I don't know which month it was. 2018 years. Yeah, 18 years. And then through trial and error, it's sort of a difficult process. And now there's more information, but at the time there wasn't much information. A lot of trial and error and a lot of money spent on parts and equipment and upgrades. So we think we have a pretty good system here now where we can plug and play and don't have to waste too much time setting up, so we can, we're pretty efficient now, so, yeah. Now it is. Yeah, now it is. Took a long time. So, yeah, I know. So, records, these records, been those record players since, it's been 87 years. What, 87 years for what? record player cutters. Oh, yeah, you're right, because the ones, the three that you're sitting there, those came out in the 40s. So would that be? 40s in the 70s. 70 years. 70 years, yes. These came out in the 40s. And these came out in the 40s as well. A lot of these amplifiers are from the 1940s. And the one we're going to use today is from the 80s. 80s. 30-some years. Yep. And luckily there's still people that cut records today. Yeah, there's a lot. I'm not the only person who does this. No. There's a person who started it. It's from New Zealand. His name's Peter King, and he's the granddaddy of lathe cut records. Right. And so he did it first, that I know of. And other people have come along and done it. And they document all their work on a website called lathtrolls.com. So if you're interested, you can see the experiments and successes from other people at lathtrolls.com. I don't know, some people are into that kind of thing, they want to know more about records. And yeah, I don't want to act like I invented it or anything because it's, I'm just an enthusiast, so. That's what we do, yeah. Yes, absolutely. So anyhow. So anyhow, we got one of your songs. We got your song pulled up here. And are we going to show the folks the process? Is that the plan? Yes. OK. However, after the commercial break, however. OK. So however, at this time. So we will have a commercial break in just a minute. Well, let's tell the people about the project you and I are working on. So we're putting together a a three album record set. Yes. That's correct, right? Right. It's the Summer Nights material. That's right. It's going to be the first Slenderman Beasley LP. LP. It's going to be brought out to be coming in stores in 2019. Yep, that's right. And we got your labels. I'll show you those labels in a little bit. Oh yeah. That would be great on the show. Yeah. And, um, so I'm really excited to, we're going to cut one for you and we're going to cut another one just to have here. So if you sell yours real fast, then there'll be another one waiting to go. Okay. And then, um, we'll have, we printed a bunch of extra stickers. So if, if they ended up, if you ended up getting some interest, we can make them really quick and we don't have to wait on stickers. Absolutely. Absolutely. I know you have a lot of fans out there who would probably like an original Lennon Beasley, extremely limited edition record set. And not only that, we did a 7-inch where you came down and visited me at the 97.7 Festival. Yes. And we cut one right there in the rain. Yes, it was. And, uh, that was fun. We listened to it. It sounded really good. That was a seven inch, but today we're going to do just one seven inch off of the, uh, off the summer nights be super limited edition. Probably just be yours to play for people. And, um, yeah, yeah. Right. That'd be great. So we're going to continue in just a few minutes, but right now we're going to take a break. So stay with us and we'll be right back. episode right now. We're here in this episode, Fono Craft Record Manufacturing. I'm still here with Jack Kilby, the owner of Fono Craft Record Manufacturing here in Bloomington, Indiana. So are you really excited about cutting radishes? Oh yes, I sure am. So today we're going to do a 7 inch. Here's the blank. Right. If you notice there's There's two holes in a lathe cut record. That's so we can put a pin in that second hole so the record doesn't slip. And so we're going to place this on the platter here. Here's my pin. I'm going to put the pin in there. Now it's locked in place. Now I'm running it at a fast RPM because I'm going to put on some turtle wax. This is the first step. The turtle wax helps polish the surface a little bit and remove the static and helps the cutting come right off of the record. So we put that on there. This is what we do on every one, every time. It doesn't kind of wipe it off. Alright. Okay, now we're going to Taking place the cut screw on top of the record. Like so. And then we're gonna line it up. See where we're at. I gotta adjust the depth a little bit on this one. Okay, so we're in range, so it's locked down and ready to cut. What I'll do is now I'm going to adjust the depth of the groove. And this little piece of plastic comes out about the size of a hair. And this brush just helps collect it so it doesn't get in our way. song. Okay. We also have it played through the stereo so we can hear it. But what you're hearing right now is being put right onto the record. The vibrations are being etched into the surface of this plastic. Alright, why don't you tell me a little bit about the song. Well, Soak Up the Sun, it's not a Sheryl Crow song, it's my originals. So, the yellow sun is bright. So, in Gonna Soak Up the Sun, I'll be sweating all day long, sleeping all day long in the beach, or getting in the water. Yeah, okay, okay. So, it's a good summer classic then, huh? Yeah. the fun parts about summer, which is why I like the whole record is summer-themed. All of your songs have something to do with the summertime, don't they, on this record? Right. Did you have a good summer? Yes. Yeah, me too. Now it's over. Yeah, it is. It's cold. Well, not freezing cold, but the leaves are coming off the trees now. I know. So you can see on there, I don't know if the camera can see, So we got the swarf, that's what the cutting is called. The swarf's coming off nicely. Yeah, so we like to have you cut again or have the camera get into closer. Closer, okay, we can do that. So we'll have to do it in just after this cut here. Yeah, yeah. Well, if you want, you could stop it now and bring it in because we still got a couple minutes to go and you can see the ending of it. I like to do the whole thing really. So I really rather do the whole thing anyhow. So I'll have you do the settings. You're gonna put another seven inches, is that right? Yeah, we'll see. Hopefully we have another one. I think I do. We'll run a little on supplies but I'll get you one. Right. Now before we cut the song, we have to do some pre-production work to the actual music. We have to change the EQ so that it will be compatible with the playback EQ on your turntables preamp. So what we're hearing is not the way it will sound when we actually play it back. We boosted the highs and we cut the bass really low. So it kind of sounds like an AM radio or something. Is that the end? It is the end. Okay, we'll put the finish groove on here. One, two, three, four. Alright. We'll take this off and we'll go listen to it right now. Right. Product. Put it on the record player. Start it right here. What do you think? How does it sound to you? It really sounds great for a record. It's a good quality sound quality. It's great. Now we do, we tested, this right here is your standard high quality turntable. Right. But not everybody has a good quality turntable. No. And so if I was to make this and somebody played it on a cheaper turntable, it might not sound as good or it might not track. So that's why we have this turntable up here. This allows us to, this is not a high quality turntable, but it allows us to listen to it and to make sure that it will track on any turntable, on any record player. What we're hearing is just, there's a speaker inside here and that's the only, that's where the sound comes from, so it's not as good as It tracks pretty well. Well, I hear it slipping a little bit, but that's because I don't have the center thing on there. That keeps it from slipping. That's not a good sound quality. No, it's not. And that's why we tested on both. Because this one, there's the speaker. It's like a tiny speaker about this big. But we make sure that it works well on this turntable and on the high-quality turntable. Of course, it's going to sound better on the high-quality turntable. Yeah. All right. So I hope you have another one if you have one. Yeah, we'll look here. I'll find another one, and we'll do a close-up of the cutting process. Yes, we do. OK. I believe we got it. I'm going to do all the steps. Okay, thank you. So now is there, that's a whole lot better. What do you think? Oh yeah, you can really see that now. Good. Now we got to see it. I just zoom out. Okay. All right. Tell me, is it recording now? It is now. Okay. Five, four, three, two, one. All right, so the first step here is to take off the protective coat that is on the record blank. And it's very staticky as you can see. And that's why we use the turtle wax to help reduce the static. Static is not our friend in this case. So now I'm going to apply the wax going to place the lead screw assembly over the record and attach the flange to the turntable with that set pin. I'm going to get lined up. So how about the high quality, so high volume? Well yeah, so we have the volume preset we get too loud it will distort and if it's not loud enough it'll be too quiet but that's why we listen to it as we cut it so we can compare what's being cut with what's being played back right so so right now here let me do a little test so yeah okay so that's that's working like I always got to test it however I go to That's pretty much it, right? Yeah, yep, that's it. Okay. So I'm gonna start the platter at 33 and a third revolutions per minute. I'm gonna get my brush in line. And now I'm gonna engage the lead screw. And I'm gonna start cutting here. down the depth a little bit. I can see it coming off there nicely. Then we'll start the record. You can see the cutting is about the width of a fine human hair. It's very thin. flammable too. It could catch on fire. We don't want that. Now I told you about the age of the lathe that we use from the 40s. The cutting head is from the 60s. That cutting head would have been used in the BBC studios. It's mono. We're not cutting in stereo. It's mono. But for what we're doing, mono works really well. It's very stable. But when you play it back on a stereo cartridge, you'll hear it out of both speakers. It's not that it just comes out of one speaker because it's mono. You hear it out of both speakers. There's just no stereo field of sound. You play piano too, is that you play piano as well? I know I asked you this before, what do you classify your music as, Lenin? Classify music. Yeah, like what do you call this style, this genre of music? You told me, I can't remember what you called it. Rock and, rock and roll. Rock and roll. I thought when I asked you before you said you call it town rock, or something like that. I believe it's Bloomington rock. Bloomington rock, okay. It still is. It's definitely rock and roll. It's got the driving beat. I'm gonna go turn off the amp over here and we'll be able to barely hear the song coming out of there. Just to show. You can just barely hear it coming out of here. That's what it sounds like when it comes out of the head. Now that was the end of the song. I used the crank to produce a lead out groove and then we put a lock groove at the end. And now we can listen to it. We already cut records here. Yeah, we cut them listen to them. They sound pretty good. We got two of them and I wanted to say how how I believe that You doing all your music in your shows is very inspirational to musicians and producers because of the the amount of output you have. I know people that have been playing music for years that have nowhere near the amount of songs written and they talk about writing songs and they talk about getting gigs, but you sir do a lot and it's very, very impressive. I'm very impressed. And not to mention that just the style of your music, it reminds me of a cross between Screamin' Jay Hawkins and and the late great Wesley Willis, two artists that I really like, and to me I think you sort of encapsulate their sound, and yeah, it's very enjoyable, and lots of people that, I know a lot of people that enjoy it too, some people I work with at work, and actually some people that Angela works with at work are familiar with your, your output and the things that you do. It's very good. So I'm so glad to have you come down here and visit with us and let your audience know what we're doing. And it's sort of part of your, you know, we're cutting your music. So it's, it all makes sense. Yes. So, um, I'm glad I'm here today. So, um, I'm glad I'm here. So you have record stickers. Oh yeah, so these are the stickers for your triple album that's coming out. Right. Which one? Is that Summer Nights? Yeah, Summer Nights. And we got the track list. It's going to be a triple gatefold. It's a pretty impressive endeavor. We'll have one for you and one for the record store that you're going to put in it where you put it at TD's you said? Yes. That's a great store here in Bloomington. And then we'll have one on our shelf here in case you sell out you'll have another one ready to go or if someone comes in and asks for it we'll have it for them. You know, I don't get paid with that one. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. That's correct. And then I was going to suggest that you do a London Beasley picture disc. This is a, this is not a London Beasley picture disc. This is the last picture disc we did for, for a customer. But, um, I don't know. I think it would be a good collectible. Can you imagine having your face right here? Smiling, maybe you wearing the boots. That's a pretty striking image. There's so many good images you can put on here, and it would look really good on the shelf at the record store. That's a good product, I think. But you have so much stuff going on right now. Maybe we'll wait till 2019 before we discuss further projects. We gotta catch up on everything that you got in the can right now. Right. So we do. So you wanna give out a shout? to White Rabbit. Oh yeah, White Rabbit is the printer that we work with. They did this image on this picture disc and they did your labels on some very high quality glossy paper. They're very good to work with. They're very reasonably priced and I will never go to Kinko's again. White Rabbit is the printing company for me. So I wanted to That's great. White Rabbit is a really good quality, right? Very good quality and local. I like to give my business to local artists and merchants and craftsmen. The only thing that is not local is the blanks come from Paris. Or not Paris, France. Somewhere in France. It's not Paris though. So they come from France. If there was someone in Bloomington making them, I'd get them here in Bloomington. But that's the only thing that is not from Bloomington. Right, right, right. So the quality of the sounds of the record, and we got a little record player, a tiny record player, and it's a very little speaker. Yeah, very little speaker. It doesn't sound very good. And the needle is, I would say subpar. But if that record player plays your record, any record player will play your record. That's how we do our quality control here, we make sure that it's playable on any device. See, there's a lot of people out there that cut records, I'm not the only person, and some people use different techniques to cut their record, and sometimes the records don't work like they should or they don't sound like they should. It kind of gives other people that cut records a bad name, you know, because they associate all lathe cuts with with that one style of cutting. But ours are guaranteed to track for the needle to stay in the groove all the way through and to not have distortion and to not have any surface noise. We go for a high quality mono playback. We're going to go to stereo in the future. It's just a little more of a process. We hope to be able to do that maybe by next year, be able to do stereo. A lot of people ask for it. But right now mono works pretty well and yeah, that's what we're doing. So it's mono now? Mono, yes. It'll come out of both of your speakers on your stereo, but it will not have a stereo field where there's a difference in between the two speakers that make a third sound. They just come out here. It's sort of like the old Beatles records were all in mono and actually you can get a lot louder with mono. Mono has its pluses. People want stereo though because a lot of people produce in stereo. I noticed your material is produced in stereo. We convert it when we do our pre Production work we convert it to a mono signal so everything comes out in the end. Stereo won't sound as good. Well stereo will sound as good, but it won't be as loud Won't be as loud won't be as loud some people like a very loud signal a lot because we work with DJs DJ wants a loud signal to come out of the record But actually if we get too loud the needle will actually jump out of the record We don't want that we don't want to be too loud But stereo does have the stereo field so you'll have you'll be able to hear Snares and bass drums and guitars and different reference frames when you're listening to it, right? So Anyhow, oh Yeah, will you tell us about? How many minutes per side of a record? Oh yeah, so on a 12 inch record, your standard LP, which I have one right here, this one works, that's what I'm not using. So we can get 12 minutes per side on a 12 inch record. We can get about, I don't know, about nine minutes per side on a 10 inch record. Of course we've got five minutes on a seven inch. have a five inch record you get about a minute 33 seconds in these these are pretty good collectible records I have a collection of just five inch records I seek them out and plus they're a little more inexpensive because they're smaller so we have we have all prices to meet anybody's budget With all these records, we're able to do grooves on both sides of the record except for the picture disc. The picture disc only has one side because the other side has to have the picture attached to it. But yeah, that's what we are offering. We also cut on picnic plates. Here's an example of a picnic plate. Solo brand picnic plates. There's a hole in there, and right here are what they look like when we cut them out. So we're able to get colors, different colors, but the sound quality is pretty rough on these. Sort of sounds like a 78 record, an old 78 record. It works well for some like like heavy rock and roll or punk rock or a noise band, sounds pretty good on those. So if price is your concern, we can put it on a lower quality material and it'll cost less, it won't sound as good, but we like to be able to offer lots of different options to people so that they can get exactly what they want and be happy with what they get. Okay, that sounds good. So 12 minutes per side. And a 12 inch. Yes. Yep, for now. We do have another lay that we'll be able to get hopefully 22 minutes per side, but we don't have that set up here yet. My partner has that set up in Pennsylvania and he's gonna be bringing that here. And hopefully we'll be able to offer that soon. You know, more time is better. You know, the more time you get on the record, the better. So eventually we'll have summer nights putting in one record, so. Well, that'd be nice, yeah. 22 minutes, so. Yeah. Hopefully. Hopefully. There's a lot of setup. When I say setup, it's not we just get it and set it up and play. We got to fine tune it. It takes a long time. Everything takes a long time, as you know. Yeah. Yeah. So we're also, when the 12-inch comes back, it comes here, 12 inch comes here. How many did you order? We'll have 100 blanks. We'll have 112 inches and we'll probably get 107 inches. We're already stocked up on 10. If you wanted a 10 inch right now we could do 10 inches all day long it looks like. Our number one sellers are seven inches and our number two sellers are 12 inches. So we'll just stock up on both of those one. Uh, Oh, probably here in the next couple of weeks or so. Yup. So when you get a hundred, uh, comes in, order another hundreds. Yeah. Yeah. Right. We'll need them. Cause we go through pretty quickly. Cause we're going to need, um, uh, please order another a hundred, um, uh, blanks when that comes in. However, um, I just wanna remind you, Mr. Jack Kilby, so we're gonna, I'll be coming back here, I'll do another session of the record records. However, we're gonna do a 12 inch. Yeah, yeah, we'll do the 12 inch next time. 12 inch next time, so it'll be all day, so. Now do you have a record player at your house? I think so. Good, well you can take those two with you then, and you can listen to them and plan for people. Maybe take them to the record store and have them have them play it over their system Right now remember that they're one sided. So on the other side is a different song Yeah, the other one's different. The other was a different song because it was a mistake Okay, so and it's marked the side that is not marked is your side. Yes Just just so you know, right, right so anyway I'm probably so you know you if I don't see Angelina here Probably Gonna text me and yeah have her have her come tomorrow. Yeah, I'll have her come tomorrow to the to your library. And from two to four. So if we do have an opening from four to five or six, we'll love to have her on the show a little longer. Of course, called Text You Too. Yeah, yeah, definitely. So about the Lenin Beastie Show project. When are you going to air these shows? We are way behind. Season four even and the first half of season five. So I see you shoot them all ahead of time ahead of a time ahead of times so Here's the linobeze work. So from season four of August 31st 2017 We went ahead and do linobeze show put them in So that way I'll upload it in YouTube. Apparently, two episodes at a time. So that's why we have the Lena Beasley YouTube channel. So that's why. And then the community access television in November 2017, in late December, no, I'm sorry, 2017 in December, computer crashed. because of the unexpected crash of iMovie project quit. And then the whole thing got to start all over again. And then in February or April 2018, the whole thing, CATS already updated iMovie and Premier. It's been, uh, off and on, uh, off and on computer. We're having, they're having computer problems right now in cats. So, um, it's been really hectic. So this year, so we're, uh, at least, um, I got the raw video from 2017, all raw videos in 2017 and 18 did not go away on my other drive. And I just put a backup drive too. So I put a backup drive too. So. That way I don't have to lose it. If one of them got broke, so at least I got a backup there. episode 20 is already here now however at this time I'm really excited about this episode right now so I'm very excited about my new guest right now so I just met her at Fono Craft Records shop on 2nd Street so I would like to introduce my new guest on my show is and also a musician is Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Brittany Campbell. Brittany, if you would come, please. Hi, Brittany. Yeah, nice to see you again. I love you, Brittany. I love you. So yes. How are you doing? I'm good. Yes, indeed, Brittany. So I'm absolutely wonderful. So I'm really so pleased to see you. Likewise. I'm glad you're here today. So I'm really excited to be here. Yeah, me too. So tell us your name and what do you do here, please, on the show. Yeah, my name is Brittany Campbell. I'm a musician and I'm on the show today to play some songs and maybe do a jam with Lennon. Yes. And tell us about yourself a little bit more, please. Uh, yeah. Well, I am 26 years old. I'm from Richmond, Indiana, but I grew up here in Bloomington. Um, I play music. I am a floral manager at Kroger downtown. Um, yeah. And I'm just excited to be here. You're working Kroger on second street. Is that right? Yeah. Yeah. Neat. So that's neat. So guess what? I got on my boots. So got on my boots that I have on right now. So apparently I got some boots that I'd like to show you. Awesome. I'd love to see that. I'd love to see that. So I'd like to present. So like play musical instrumental. So later on this show. So yeah. And also it's a possibility. I got pink jeans. It's in the wardrobe room. So during the commercial break, I like to show you.
