However, also lighting up my birthday candles, Nicole videotaped me in Brooklyn, as well as my 40th birthday candles at Cafe Pizzeria, of course, Fazzoli's. So, that's what we did, so. So Nicole, what do you think about those two songs here? I think you did great. Your music's pretty awesome, and I'm excited that you actually made a song for me and for the Fasoli's girls. Yes, indeed. Very well. Of course, Michael English really like, I'm sure he will love to have a copy of my album called Pleasures. He definitely will. Definitely will. I already gave one to Cole, my manager of male manager of Fasolis. Colin, I'm gonna give one to Andy and of course Michael. Cool, I think they'll love that. Of course they're gonna love that music album. So anyway, I had a great time working with you here. What do you think about having me working with you at Fasolis there? I had a good time the last few years with you, honestly. Like I said, you're one of my favorites and one of the best employees we could hire there. That's right. So indeed. So I'm happy to be here in this place. So I'm glad we were here. So I'm happy to be here in Nicole and I want, that would be nice to, I would like to have Michelle to be on my show. Yeah. I don't know if she'll get on, but hopefully she will for you. Hopefully she will for me. Of course she's been busy. So yeah, she's always busy. Unfortunately, she's been always busy, of course, scheduling, of course. So, anyway, maybe one day I will love to invite Michelle to be on my show. Yeah, that'd be awesome. That'd be awesome, so that'd be nice. I'd love to come over to your home, and you'll be working Friday, so. Yes, I should have just a weekday schedule from about 8.30 to 4.30, so we'll see what happens with that. I'm hoping that'll be my schedule. And it's hoping, of course, that you're going to be letting me know. Yeah, absolutely. And then we can come over for dinner and hang out and talk and whatnot. And that'd be right. So someone might take me home in Bloomington. Yeah, we could. So that'd be, of course, you or Brooklyn or whoever. However, I really like to. be here this place, Nicole, and I'm happy to be here. So, Nicole, it was my pleasure having you here in my show. I'm glad you could have me on here today. I'm glad we got it on, have you on there for your second appearance in a row. So, yes. Nicole Hall, ladies and gentlemen, folks, we'll be back. Don't go away at all. We'll be back after this, so stay with us, please. Nicole, it was my pleasure having you here. Thank you, Lennon. Thank you. to introduce my new guest on my show with me on the Lenin Beasley Show, a pastor from First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana. Please let us say hello to Lisa Knowling. Yes. Hi, Lisa Knowling. How you doing? I'm doing great, Lenin. Thank you for having me today. Yes, indeed. I'm very happy to see you. Well, thank you. Good to see you too. Yes, indeed. I'm honored to be on your show. Yes, you are. So yes, indeed. So I'm really happy to be here in this place. Thanks, London. Yes, before I ask you some questions, I just got a job on February 7th, 2024. So my day one at Indiana Memorial Union in Bloomington, Indiana on 7th Street is kitchen utility and Last, a week before last, I got the job on the 20, the first was on a Friday and then the 31st was a Thursday. The 28th of January, I receive an email and I got the job and then my paperwork is already filled up and then now on Monday, the 5th, I got another email. It's all paperwork that's already filled up and all ready to go. And then day one is kicking in potentially on the seventh, but original date was the 12th of February. However, the seventh of February, they want me to start earlier. So the sooner the better for me. That's exciting. Congratulations. Well, thank you so much. And kitchen utility is about washing, loading dishes, and there's a 25 feet wide dish washing machine. It's worth 25 feet, a restaurant size, an IU restaurant size. So, and then I put the loading dishes in the back of the dishwasher, and then also The dishes run through the belt by itself. The machine is a 25 feet belt. It'll be running a normal size, normal speed. And then also when those dishes get ready to come out and then I'll pick them up and then put away and then organizing. Okay. And also in that position, it's behind sugar and spice. Yeah, I know exactly where that is. I like their gingerbread cookies. Have you had their gingerbread cookies? No, I have not yet. They're really good. They have really good gingerbread cookies and Special K Chewy's. Yeah, I should try it. They make like a cereal and make almost like a Rice Krispie treat out of it. It has peanut butter and Special K and yeah. Those are the two really good things there. Yes, indeed. They also have like a zebra cake that's good. You try those things and you come back and tell me about them, okay? I will. Okay. And okay. Also, not only that, but also I'm doing a secondary duty too, is taking out trash first thing in the morning every day. Okay. And then also during the day too, when we get a busy rush. Okay. You go and take care of that? Yep. Okay. There's going to be five, five people in the crew of kitchen utility, including me. So actually six people, including me. So, and that's, I'm proud of you. That's really great. And not only just that it pays me a lot higher. That's the only, okay. Cause for solis is not ending at all. However, they've been getting hired and hired and hired and in, We've got a number of people, or at least over 30 people, to 30 to 40, I would say, but between 20 to 35, really. And then cut my hours up. I used to work 40 hours, if as always, but unfortunately, the general manager cut my stuff to 30 to 32, and that's not right. That's making at least 13, I don't know how much since it is. kept forgetting an hour. But that's still okay money, but however, it's not enough. But Indian Memorial Union is higher. So I'll give a free meal voucher in any four places, in any six places. I'm very happy about it. So I'm very happy about that. Not only just that, but I'm ready to have Keeping you on my show here. I'm excited to be here, so let's keep going. Where is your hometown? Indianapolis. I was born in Indianapolis as well. Oh, what side of town? All over Indianapolis. I don't recall which side of Indianapolis it is. I live all over Indianapolis. I lived on the northeast side, so I was born at a house that was like at 56th and David, and then I did most of my growing up at a house that was near about 71st and Shaveland. Right. So where did you go to high school? Lawrence Central. Go Bears. Lawrence Central. I went to Martinsville High School. Oh, so you moved to Martinsville by the time you were in high school? Yes, in junior and high school. I was in junior high school and my second half of the day I stayed to senior year and then I graduated high school in Martinsville. And did you graduate from high school? I did. I graduated from high school. I sure did too. I think we graduated the same year. I graduated in 2001. Oh no, you graduated a few months later than me. I graduated in 1998. So 1998. So what brought you to Bloomington, Indiana? The first time or now? For the first time through now. So for the first time I came to Bloomington as a student. I came to IU for undergrad. I was here and studied journalism and French for four years. Well, I was here for four years total, but one year I spent abroad. And then I came back here again in 2019 to become a pastor at First United Methodist. One of the pastors. That's very neat. So what were you studying at the time? When I was at IU the first time? High school first and then IU. Oh, well in high school I studied all the general subjects, like most people do, but I was thinking that I was being called to become a journalist, so I spent a lot of time on things related to journalism. So I did my high school newspaper, I had an internship at the Indianapolis Star, and then I was involved in a group called Children's Express that was free on journalists. So I was super focused on journalism, that was like most of my extracurricular activities, and then came to IU to study journalism, and I did, I studied journalism in French, dabbled a little bit in political science, dabbled a little bit in religion, and then my sophomore year is when I finally said out loud that I felt a guy calling me to ministry. And so that's when I started looking at seminaries for grad school. That's right. So I guess, do you like music? I love music. So classical music? I like classical music that we enjoy in church, oftentimes as post lutes and pre lutes. But if I'm listening to music, I tend to listen more to eighties and nineties, a few things from today. And then I also really like some things out of sixties and seventies too. I like pop music. I'm in pop music. I love pop music from the jazz music from the twenties, thirties and forties. That's great. Do you have a favorite jazz tune you like? Benny Goodman. Love Benny Goodman. Yeah. so of the 1930s and 40s. Do you like to take the A train kind of stuff? An A train, yes. Do you like that song? I do, yes. Yeah, me too. That's a good one, isn't it? Yes, it is. You know that the music school has like a right of swing concert oftentimes in the spring that is all their jazz bands. Really? That's really cool. Yeah, you have to check it out. Yes, I should. Do you play musical instruments? I do. I play a little. I took piano lessons all throughout my childhood. And so I play some piano. And then in college, I determined that I wanted to learn how to play guitar. So I play a tiny little bit of guitar too. So a tiny little bit of guitar. And some piano. And some piano. Yes. I play a tiny little bit of guitar and piano. Which do you like? I play drums too. Oh, drums too. Do you have a favorite? Phil Collins, the drummer. Yeah. So I am I do sing too, so do you sing? Not well. Not well, I don't sing well. I like to sing. I'm a terrible singer. I don't sing well. You don't sing well at all. No. If I'm just by myself or I'm just hanging out, I will sing, but you don't want me in the choir. Right. So what do you like to do for fun activities? Lots of things. So personally, I like to be outdoors a lot and I like to be active. I like to run. We have two dogs and we like to walk the dogs. I walked the two of them this morning. We love being out hiking and in nature. We love going on trips. My family travels all the time. We like to eat. We're kind of foodies. Yeah, we like to try different restaurants. And I also really love reading and if I have a minute writing, but mostly reading. Right. And that's very nice. I like to walk outside for fun and walking all over. I took a 60 minute walk from my house to downtown. Today? No, a couple of years ago. Okay. So I'm very happy. At least I got my exercise. March 7th, 2020, before the pandemic hit, I walk away from the 11th Street and Rogers, take the B-Line trail, all the way to Countryside, Country Club. All the way south of town? All the way south of town. And then I came back walking to the library. I took a one hour, 45 minutes walk. Good for you. So I really did it. And very happy. And then we went into lockdown, like a few days later. A few days later, then lockdown. So no one wants to go out at all. No, no, no. And how many years have you been married to Colin? So Colin and I got married in 2012. So coming up in May, we'll celebrate 12 years together. 12 years. Yes. 12 years. Yeah. We're pretty excited. Yes. And also, what brought you to First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana? Well, in the United Methodist Church, we have what's called an appointment system. And so the bishop has a cabinet, which is made up of superintendents, who pray and discern together about where they think God is calling them to appoint different pastors in our conference. And I have been serving a church just on Ball State's campus in Muncie, like right along the edge. I love, well, I love ministry, but I really love college towns. I love everything that happens there, and I love being in ministry with people who are in university towns. And so when Pastor Mark retired, The cabinet again was discerning and felt like I would be a good fit. And so they called me up and I came down here for what's called a take-in interview. And so I had an interview with the team and this is for the lead pastor position. And keep in mind, this church had never had a female lead pastor in 200 years. So I'm the first female lead pastor, yeah, in 200 years. So that's pretty exciting. You're the first female pastor in 200 years. Well, they had associate pastors who have been female, but I'm the first lead pastor. Lead pastor. The first lead pastor in 200 years. He was a female. So it was pretty exciting, a little daunting. And we had a good prayerful discernment time at that take-in interview. And so then we fixed, the bishop fixed the appointment and it was announced pretty soon after. And then I started in July of 2019 is when I started. Yes. That's Mark Finstermarker retired. Yes. I did have Mark Finsterbocker. Was he on your show? He was on my show a few years ago. Oh, that's neat. Well, I'm glad to be coming here again, too. Yes, it was a few years ago, like five years ago. Yeah. On Christmas season of Winnipeg in 2018. Yeah. Anyway, I'm very happy for Mark. I think I got one more, by the way. Yes, I do. When you became the pastor in First United Methodist Church, that was July 2019. Yes, it was. So 2019 and you've been a pastor for five years. Yes, almost five years, but I've been in ministry almost 19 years. I started in July of 2005 at a church in Indianapolis. Indianapolis started the church in 2005. Yeah. And I was an associate pastor there for six years. And then I went to Princeton, Indiana, which is near Evansville. And then I went to Muncie, and then I came here. Very cool. So, and, um, yeah, so, oh, um, speaking about First United Methodist Church, I actually wrote a song for first, that song, Millennium BC song called First United Methodist Church. It's excellent. It's excellent. It was over a year ago, so it's been released over one year ago. So it's been a great... And tell about what you say in the song. What do you tell about us? It's about the song I would like to say. Let me pull up here. I hope I got... Let's hope I do. I got my Wi-Fi. So let me go to band camp. Let him be his lead band camp. Because what impressed me with the song is how much you remark upon what a welcoming place it is, and how open and welcoming it is. Yes. Yeah, because that's something that's really important to me in churches, and I'm glad that you sensed that and were willing to... Yes, so I wrote a song for First United Methodist Church, and every Sunday morning at 9.30, traditional Cossack worship service, singing hymns and reading the Word. Uh-huh. Following by in verse 2 followed by our discipleship or at 1045 with causes for all ages and all stages in faith So first United Methodist Church on 4th and Washington Street in Bloomington, Indiana where people are gathering to worship sing and studying the word Every Sunday morning between 10 45 to 1145 there are coffees and refreshments during the fellowship hour and then contemporary worship service upbeat contemporary worship as so much more in common ground worship at 1145 a.m. and then there's two the course stays the same of course there's two bridges classic hymn singing classic hymn songs in traditional service singing contemporary worship songs during the contemporary worship service. Also studying the word in all two worship services. Live stream for 9.30 a.m. for those people who are watching online. People are gathering in a small group. People are gathering for outreach ministries and so much more. Now we do have 11.45 service for our live stream. We do. We didn't have it at the time, but we do now. But I think you did a great job of describing who we are and what we do. Yeah? Yes, indeed. So I'm very happy about writing a song for First United Methodist Church. Well, thank you. I feel like it's an honor that you wrote a song about the church. Yes, indeed. So I'm very happy. So it was every October of every year. I lost my mom, died of October 19, 2005. just 11 days before my mom would have been her 54th birthday. And then October 30th, my mom's birthday, my mom's death day is October 19th. So, and she's in heaven today. So, and then I'm very happy. I'm glad when October, every year October hits, I'm glad I get to talk to you about a loss of my mom. Well, I appreciate that you're willing to share that one because that's a horrible tragedy in your life and a really hard time. And I think she would be really proud of the work that you're doing now and the ways that you serve others in your job, the ways that you bounce back and forth between two faith communities that really care about you, First United Methodist, and this work you're doing. All this, the music and the video recording, yeah. I think she'd be really proud of you. Yes, indeed. So I'm very, very fortunate that there's an event later tonight at Mardi Gras party. Yay. Are you coming? I am, indeed. OK. 530 to 7 PM. We're going to have pancakes and live music. So you can dance and have fun. And yeah, it'll be great. That'd be very nice. It'll be really. So, yes, indeed. So, you're meeting with the staff on Tuesday mornings for prayer. Yes, we have prayer time and then we also go over things that are happening in life at the church so that we can all be on the same page. That'd be right. Yeah. So, yes, how is your daughter doing? She's doing great. She's playing basketball this season and having a really good time. She's got another game tonight, so she'll be a few minutes late for Mardi Gras. But yeah, she's over at Twin Lakes and she loves it. Your Twin Lakes is on the west side? I might know where that is. Okay. Let's like take second street out. Not quite all the way to 69. Right. Yeah. So, um, anyway, oh, uh, oh yeah, there's one more thing. Um, you're taking some time off. So I am. So I got a renewal grant and I'm, um, very thankful. Lily endowment gives out grants to clergy, uh, to take time for what makes their heart sing. and to be restored and to rest and to come back renewed from ministry. And so I'm super excited about that, that the church received a grant and I'll be gone this summer for four months, having the opportunity to get renewed and travel and spend time with my family. And I'm really grateful for this gift. I'm grateful for the support of congregation and for the endowment. It's a wonderful opportunity. Can't wait. Pastor John and also Donna. Yeah, pastors, Donna and John are going to be in charge while I'm away. Yeah, so be gentle for them, pray for them, support them, okay? It's hard work. I've done that. I've been in their spot before. It's hard work. Yeah. Okay. Okay. And, uh, oh yes, absolutely. And, uh, so, uh, yes, uh, and then also we're, every, uh, month of December, uh, on my birthday, we'll get together. We got together. We had, you brought Kate to the church. We had lunch for your birthday. And my birthday is this week. Yes, it is. Uh, happy birthday, um, Lisa. Thank you. It's the 16th of February. Yeah, good memory. So it's on a Friday. On a Friday, this Friday. Yes, it is. A birthday three-day weekend. Yes. Yes, a three-day weekend for you. Well, so I don't really get Monday off. My daughter does at the school system, but I'm going to have to work on Monday. So about three days. For a federal holiday. That's Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Oh, you're saying Friday, Saturday, Sunday holiday for me. Cause your birthday. Sure. Oh, you say, so I should celebrate that whole time is what you're saying. Yeah. Okay. I'm definitely celebrating Friday, Saturday. I got to, you know, John and I are going to co-preach on Sunday. It's going to be fun. A co-preach on Sunday. Yeah. We're going to have a little conversation for the sermon time. Yes. It's very nice. So Pastor Lisa, I'm very happy. that June 19th, 2024 marks my 20th anniversary of producing Community Access Television Services. Awesome, congratulations. 20 years. Okay.
